4 ways to Demolish a building

In the article “4 Ways to Demolish the Building”, by Rodriguez (2018), states the demolition workers were looking into the considerations and the ways on how to have the buildings to be demolished. There are 4 method on how to demolish a building stated in the passage.

The technique use for demolition will depends on the location of the building, the primary building materials so that specific method could be used.  Disposal of debris after demolition and safety of the demolition crew and the public must also be taken into consideration.

The passage also introduces the different ways of demolition of a building which includes implosion, High Reach Arm, Wrecking Ball and Selective Demolition.

The first method introduce is Implosion. It is to knock out a building’s vertical supports which causes the building to collapse onto itself from the inside out. They were often used to demolish huge structures in urban areas. In order to demolish it successfully, the crews need to analyse a complete set of structural blueprints, to identify the main components of the building, determine whether other areas need to be blasted, determine the type of explosives to use and where to position the explosives. The second method is High Reach Arm demolition. This method of demolition is using a base machine fitted with a long demolition arm consisting of three sections or a telescopic boom. A demolition tools, such as a crusher, shears or hammer is attached to the end of the arm to break up the building from the top.  The machine removes the large pieces of the building structure for the ground crew to further break them down for disposal. This method of demolition is used to demolish building of height more than 66 feet. It is used on reinforced concrete building, masonary, steel, and mixed material structures. The third method is wrecking ball demolition. This method is an old and common technique use to demolish concrete and masonry structures with a wrecking ball weighting up to 13,500 pounds. The ball is either dropped onto or swung into the structure which simply crushes the building with repeated blows. The demolition must be performed with highly skilled and experienced crane operators. It creates a great deal of dust, vibration, and noise.  The last method is the selective demolition. This method is to strip out, selective materials demolition. It allows builders to reuse or recycle the building’s materials such as wood, brick, metals, and concrete. The aim of this demolition is to recover the maximum amount of primary(reusable) and secondary(recyclable) material in a safe and cost-effective procedure. However, the process is labour-intensive and is difficult to achieve in a timely and economical manner for light-framed building.

From the passage, we learnt the different ways of demolition. Each technique has its’ own set of pros and cons. In my opinion, implosion is the quickest method to put down high rise building in seconds, even though explosives are involved, if well planned it is a very safe and fast technique widely use. However, implosion is not suitable for house or small structure demolition. Mechanical demolition using high reach arm method and wrecking ball will be better demolition technique to apply to such structure building. As for building that preservation of part of the building is require, Selective demolition is best technique to use.

Before selecting any type of demolition technique use, the demolition engineers need to consider and assess the building to be demolished and the surrounding environment. They must be equipped with the necessary tools, equipment and skill to carry out the task.  The team must always choose the safest manner to complete the task including the planning on how to get the building to be demolished safely.

Demolition is a dangerous process. It may cause injuries and possible death due to collapses of inadequate support of partially demolished structures. Other than choosing the most appropriate technique to use for demolition, they also need to consider the total environment. Safety is one of the major consideration too, due to the demolition of structure, there are many problems faced by the demolition crew such as exposure to dust, noise, chemical and heat. To overcome all these problems, suitable measures must be undertaken.

The ultimate goal of demolition is to pull down a building in the safest and most efficient way possible while working within the budget. In order to achieve this, a careful and detailed demolition plan must be set up

4 ways to demolish a building Summary Draft 2

4 ways to Demolish a building

In the article “4 Ways to Demolish the Building”, by Rodriguez (2018), it states the 4 commonly used method to demolish   building and the factors taken into consideration when doing so. The technique used will depends on the location, material used and structure of the building.  Safety of crew and public will be the most important consideration. The first method Implosion involves using explosive to knock down a building from inside out after careful analysis of the blueprint of the building. This method is often use in urban area. The next method High Reach Arm demolition uses base machine fitted with long arm with demolition tools to break down a building.  This method of demolition is used to demolish building of height more than 66 feet.  The third method mention, Wrecking ball method is an old and common technique.  It uses a ball weighting up to 13,500 pounds to either dropped onto or swung into the structure which simply crushes the building with repeated blows.  The last method Selective Demolition method is to strip out, selective materials demolition. It allows builders to reuse or recycle the building’s materials. This method recovers the maximum amount of reusable and recyclable material.  Demolition is one of the most dangerous operations in construction, which ever ways selected, the safety of the demolition crew and the general public is most important consideration.

4 Ways to demolish a building

4 ways to Demolish a building

In the article “4 Ways to Demolish the Building”, by Rodriguez (2018), there are 4 considerations and methods on how to demolish a building.

4 considerations on how to demolish a building are: -

1)      Building location

2)      Building materials

3)      Purpose of the demolition

4)      How to dispose the debris

4 methods to demolish a building are: -

1)      Implosion

2)      High Reach Arm

3)      Wrecking ball

4)      Selective demolition

1)      Implosion

This method is using an explosion. It is to knock out a building’s vertical supports which causes the building to collapse onto itself from the inside out. They were often used to demolish huge structures in urban areas.

In order to demolish the building successfully, the crews need to analyse a complete set of structural blueprints, to identify the main components of the building, determine whether other areas need to be blasted, determine the type of explosives to use and where to position the explosives.

2)      High Reach Arm

This method is using machine fitted with a long demolition arm. It has about 66 feet high. It consists of 3 different tools such as crusher, shears or a hammer, its attached to the end of the arm which were used to break up the building from the top down. It removes large pieces of the structure and a special grounds crew breaks down the pieces and sorts of them for disposal.

It is used on reinforced concrete, masonry, steel, and mixed-material structures. High Reach arm method is safer than traditional wrecking ball demolition for removing tall buildings

3)      Wrecking Ball

This method is using a wrecking ball weighting up to 13,500 pounds. It is used for concrete and other masonry structures. The ball is either dropped onto or swung into the structure which simply crushes the building with repeated blows.

The demolition must be performed with highly skilled and experienced crane operators. It is limited by the crane’s size and the working room, including proximity to power line. It creates a great deal of dust, vibration, and noise.

4)      Selective Demolition

This method is to strip out, selective materials demolition. It allows builders to reuse or recycle the building’s materials such as wood, brick, metals, and concrete,

The aim of this demolition is to recover the maximum amount of primary(reusable) and secondary(recyclable) material in a safe and cost-effective procedure.

However, the process is labour-intensive and its difficult to achieve in a timely and economical manner for light-framed building.

Self Introduction

11/9/18

Subject: Self introduction.

Dear Prof. Brad,

I am Nicholas Chang Hou Yi. I am a first-year student from Singapore Institue of Technology doing my degree in Sustainable infrastructure Engineering (LAND).   I have graduated from Singapore Polytechnic in Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering along with the Certificate of Healthcare in the year 2016.  I had just completed my Full-Time National Service(NS) on 5th Sept 2018 which is on the last week.

To be able to study in university is so far my biggest achievement in life as I was always refer to as a slow learner during my primary school years.  I came a long way though from Normal Technical Stream in Secondary School to ITE (Institute of Technical Education) and to Singapore Polytechnic. The journey was tough and challenging as I was not a very bright boy to start with.

I am a very hardworking and friendly person.  I am very persevere and determine when I set a target to achieve. I enjoy being with friends and family members.  In my leisure time, I enjoy playing guitar.  I have participated in many concerts when I was studying in Polytechnic and recently played in my friend's wedding ceremony.

My strengths in doing this course is that I am quite good in doing Engineering subjects such as Mathematics and Computer Programming such as C++.  I am a very technical trained and hands-on student.

My biggest weakness in this course of study is with Physics which I do not have a sound foundation.  I am also weak in  written language and spoken language as all my years I am expose to studying very technical subjects. I am working hard to overcome my weakness by reading, doing quizzes and learning from peers who are better in these areas.  I have also taken part time job as a waiter so that I could have more exposure and learn to communicate with people.

The main reason why I choose SIT is that it offers courses that equip students with specialized skills needed to current industry. I am particularly interested in the Integrated Work Study Programme (WSP) as we have a chance to apply what is being taught to integrate them to work at the same time. The programme also equip students with necessary knowledge and skills to be more employable in the job market.

I am very grateful to the professors who had given me this opportunity to be part of the SIT family.  I will thrive my best and treasure my learning experience here.

I will race ahead to graduate with the degree in 4 years time. If you are interested to be my friend, you can email to me at nicholaschang@gmail.com or Linkedin.

Yours sincerely

Nicholas Chang

Reflection in real life

In the 1st  week of school, I have learned the vast difference between my 2 years Full-Time National Service (NS)  and the studies in SIT.

In NS, my work is not related to my studies. Now I had to revise all my past years educational from Polytechnic into this new course. I believe this will be a tough experience for me going through this semester. It is because, I have to interact to new courses and new friends, including friends from polytechnic.

This week, we cover  5 different syllabus  which mathematics and C++ programmings are my favorite subjects. Physics,  Lifeskills and Measurements of Engineering are new syllabus to me, that I need more time to study through it.

I have difficulties in my Physics, because in my years of education, I did not study this subject. Hopefully I wished to get more help from my lecturer, especially on the word problems that I need to do that Free Body Diagram (FBD), finding those Magnitude and Forces.
